THE FLY THAT CAUSED IT

  • This disease is spread by the bite of a tsetse fly
  • These flies are most common in rural areas
  • They live in mid- Africa

STAGE ONE

  • The first stage starts one to three weeks after the
  • Bite. Some of the symptoms of stage one are
  • Fever, headaches, itchiness, and joint pain.
  • After weeks or even months the second stage will
  • Begin

STAGE TWO

  • The second stage starts out with
  • confusion, bad coordination, numbness,
  • and trouble sleeping. Diagnosis is finding
  • the parasite in blood smears or in the
  • fluid of lymph nodes

Untitled Slide

  • To tell the differences between the first
  • and second stages they take a lumbar puncture test

TREATMENT

  • To prevent this very bad disease doctors
  • must screen the population at risk with blood
  • tests. Treating a patient is easier when the
  • disease is detected before the first stage.
