Foxtrot

  • One of the easiest and most popular dances
  • The base of the dance was essentially graceful walking

Tango

  • Tango was the romantic rage of the 1920's in the US
  • The Tango is considered a "dancer's dance" as it was more difficult to learn
  • Unique Rhythms and footwork

Waltz

  • Dancers are close together
  • Ballroom and folk dance
  • Main difference in styles of the waltz is the tempo
  • In compound meter

Charleston

  • Differed from other dances as it focused mainly on leg movements
  • Especially Popular among Flappers
  • Made popular by it's appearance in the Broadway Show "Running Wild"

Lindy Hop

  • A partner dance that originated in Harlem, New York
  • Includes footwork borrowed from the Charleston
  • Can be wild and spontaneous or cool and sophisticated

Black Bottom

  • Popularized by African Americans in the south
  • Jazz dance that combined shoulder and hip movements
  • Helped shatter the dominance of couple dancing
