FACTS ABOUT ANGEL ALCALA

  • He was a scientist from the Phillippines.
  • He was a marine biologist.
  • He gave major contributions to his country's marine development and ecology concerns.
  • He is also involved in other biological science fields such as herpetology( the study of amphibians and reptiles), marine biogeography, and marine conservation biology.

ANGEL'S EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND

  • He was born on March 1, 1929.
  • He and his family are from the Phillippines.
  • His love for marine life started when his was very young.
  • He helped his father take care of the fish farms where he worked.
  • He was around coral reefs and shallow waters most of the time,which is where he found his love for marine life.

ANGEL'S RESEARCH AND LEGACY

  • He made major contributions to marine biology research efforts in the Phillippines.
  • He authored over 160 scientific papers as well as books on the subjects he was involved in.
  • He was the first Filipino scientist to come up with several comprehensive studies concerning the Phillippines reptiles and amphibians.
  • He had also made minor contributions for mammals and aves( birds).
  • There are 400 species of known reptiles and amphibians, but 50 more were added because of Angel.

ADDITIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Because of Angel's works concerning marine life and herpetology, researchers have a reliable source for conservation programs in the country.
  • He was given the Field Museum award of Merit for contributions to environment biology.
  • He is currently the director of the Commission on Higher zonal research center.
  • He is also the director of of the Silliman University- Angelo King center for Research and Environmental management.
