Ancient warfare

Roman warfare

The Roman military was the most successful and powerful in history, dominating the Western world for over a thousand years. The size, strength and organization of their infantry force wouldn’t be equaled again for another thousand years. The Romans believed themselves to be descendents of Mars, literally the sons of the war god. They were a proud and uncompromising people who above all else excelled at the art of warfare.

The Roman army left its mark wherever it went, creating roads, depositories and bases. Involving men from the age of 16 to 60, it was a conduit for the Romanisation of conquered lands and one of the main carriers of foreign cultural influence back on Rome itself.

Aztec warfare

Once the Aztecs had decided to conquer a particular city, they sent an ambassador from Tenochtitlan to offer the city protection. They pointed out very politely the advantages of being able to trade with the Empire.

Mayan warfare

Archaeologists for a long time believed the ancient Maya to be gentle and peaceful people. Maya warfare was intense, chronic, and irresolvable, because limitations of food supply and transportation made it impossible for any Maya kingdom to unite the whole region in an empire. The archaeological record shows that wars became more intense and frequent toward the time of the Classic collapse.
