  • Audition for dance roles or for membership in dance companies.
  • Perform with a company in productions, singing or acting in addition to dancing.

THE LIFE OF A DANCER

  • Hectic.
  • Stressful.
  • Auditions are a large part.
  • Fast-paced.
  • Rehearse and practice most of the day.

SALARY

  • Pay varies greatly with company and position.
  • Some dancers have to have part-time jobs.
  • Median pay is about $14.16 an hour
  • Top ten percent can earn more than $33.34 per hour.
  • Hours are also not set in stone, and many contracts renew every year.

EDUCATION

  • Most dance positions do not require a degree in anything.
  • Positions are determined by audition.
  • You must have a certain amount of formal training to succeed.
  • NYC Ballet only accepts graduates from the SAB (School of American Ballet).
  • Must start training at an early age.

  • Not much time to do anything else.

EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK

  • 6% in the USA.
  • 15% in Indiana.
