1.
Democritus
Born:460 BC. Died: 370 BC
Was an Ancient Greek Philosopher born in Abdera, Thrace, Greece.
Formulated an Atomic Theory for the universe.
2.
Aristole
Born: 384 BC. Died: 322 BC.
Was a Greek Philosopher and Polymath.
Is one of the most important founding figures in Western Philosophy.
3.
Antoine Lavoisier
Born: August 26th, 1743. Died: May 8th, 1794.
Found the two elements that makeup water.
He had named one oxygen (Greek for becoming sharp) because of the acid in it.
4.
John Dalton
Born: September 6th, 1766. Died: July 27th, 1844.
Developed the Atomic Theory in the 1800's.
Tried to calculate the Atomic weight of compunds.
Also tried to come up with the atomic structures of atoms.
5.
Henri Becquerel
Born: December 18th, 1852. Died: August 25th, 1908.
Discovered Uranium produced x-ray radiation
Won the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics.
6.
J.J. Thomson
Born: December 18th, 1856. Died: August 30th, 1940.
Discovered the electron using cathode-ray tube.
Thought the Atoms were a sphere of positive force with electrons around it.
7.
Max Planck
Born: April 23rd, 1858. Died: October 4th, 1947.
Founder of the Quatum Theory.
Made a profound discovery in Modern Physics.
8.
Marie and Pierre Curie
Marie, was Born: November 7th, 1867. Marie, Died: July 4th 1934
Pierre, was Born: May 15th, 1859. Pierre, Died: April 19th, 1906.
They both, were a married couple, after their marriage, they continued to work together in science.
They discovered Polonium and Radium.
9.
Robert Millikan
Born: March 22nd, 1866. Died: December 19th, 1953.
Was responsible for finding the charge of a single electron.
Proved that Subatomic Particles do exist.
10.
Ernest Rutherford
Born: August 30th, 1871. Died: October 19th, 1937.
Discovered the Nucleus.
Was a student of J.J. Thomson.
11.
Niels Bohr
Born: October 7th, 1885. Died: November 18th, 1962.
Proposed a new atom model that would allow the electrons to be outside the nucleus and orbit around the nucleus.
His model is known as the Bohr Model.
12.
Henry Moseley
Born: November 23rd, 1887. Died: August 10th, 1915.
Found the relationship between wavelengths, x-rays produced, and the atomic number of a metal.
His founding became known as Moseley's Law.
13.
EWRIN SCHRODINGER
Born: August 12th, 1887. Died: January 4th, 1961.
Came up with the equation for quantum wave mechanics.
Tried to see electrons in packets that moved certain ways.
14.
Werner Heisenberg
Born: August 12th, 1887. Died: January 4th, 1961.
Came up with the uncertainly priciple.
Was a German Theoretical physicist.
15.
James Chadwick
Born: October 20th, 1891. Died: July 24th, 1974.
Proved the existence of neutrons.
Changed the way that the atom was viewed.
