PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Maurice Sendak

By: Mollie Bachmann

Maurice Sendak was born on June 10, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. He died on May 26, 2012 at age 83 in a Connecticut hospital.

Sendak wanted to show the anxious, emotional side of childhood in his books. He wished to create characters who were not perfectly behaved children, and had real, raw emotions.

My favorite character of Sendak's is Max from "Where the Wild Things are," because he is not the typical "perfect" child one often sees in children's books. He misbehaves and shows some negative emotions, while also displaying an interesting imagination.

MAJOR BOOK AWARDS

  • Caldecott medal for where the wild things are
  • First American illustrator to receive international Hans Christian Anderson award for his entire body of work
  • Laura ingalls wilder award for entire body of work
  • National medal of arts for outstanding illustrations from president clinton

Oficial Website

  • Sendakforkids.com
  • This website creatively displayed information on Maurice Sendak and his works. The information was organized and easy to access. While there wasn't much biographical information on Sendak, there was plenty of information on his works displayed.

Sendak's books are described as appropriate for grades K-4, because of their honest, emotional messages that kids of these ages can easily relate to. Source: commonsensemedia.org

Interestingly,Sendak's advice to young aspiring artists was simply, "Move to New York."
