  • Individualism/collectivism
  • High or low context
  • Power distance

4 MAJIOR DIFFERENCES

  • Expressive vs. instrumental
  • Task vs. relationship
  • Forcefulness
  • Individual vs. group

EXPRESSIVE VS. INTRUMENTAL

  • Expressive: focuses on feeling and relationships
  • Ex. Before a meeting the person would how your life is going or make friendly conversation
  • Instrumental: straight to the point
  • Ex. When somebody arrives to work they to straight to their task at hand...task oriented
  • Usually women are expressive while men seem to be more instrumental

Task vs. relationship
Women tend to be the ones in a group to care and want to help anyway possible

FORCEFULNESS

  • How much somebody talks
  • Interrupt others
  • Claims personal space
  • Calls attention to themselves in a conversation
  • Men tend to be more forceful than women

INDIVIDUAL VS. GROUP

  • Individual: seek spotlight
  • Highlight their own individual accomplishments
  • Most commonly men
  • Group: women like to shine light in everybody

IN CONCLUSION

  • Making generalizations about genders are misleading
  • Study has shown that an average,
  • men interrupt each other the same amount of times as women do
