SOCIETAL SHIFT IN THE 60S AND BEYOND

BEATLES COME TO AMERICA

  • Beatles came to America for the first time and performed on the Ed Sullivan show
  • This was not the start of the shift but it encouraged it greatly
  • As the years went on, their music started to shift with the the times.
  • For example, they started out singing about love, by the end of the 60s they were singing about drugs

Harvard professor, Timothy Leary & LSD

  • Introduced the psychedelic drug LSD
  • After he realized the effect, he released it to the public
  • By releasing it he stared a revolution

The Pill becomes widely available in the U.S.

  • The contraceptive birth control pill is released.
  • This not only kept girls from getting pregnant it also encouraged more sex.
  • Since pregnancies were preventable, people had more sex leading to STDs.

MALCOM X

  • He was a Muslim minister and human rights activist.
  • He challenged the mainstream non-violent civil rights protests.
  • He attempted to make peace between black and whites.

STONEWALL RIOTS

  • Violent protests that occurred at the stonewall inn
  • This shifted society because eventually the riots helped make way for the fight for gay rights.

ENGEL V. VITALE

  • The case that ruled prayer I'm school was unconstitutional.
  • It was a big shift because it was the first time church and state were separate.

RFK Assassinated

  • RFK, JFKs brother was assassinated on June, 5 1968
  • Since this event happened right after MLK’s death, the country was a bit chaotic

I AM A MAN CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH

  • A strike that demanded that blacks were still treated unequally
  • It showed people could make a difference which was a turning point

The Catcher in the Rye

  • This book inspired teens to reject the social norms and to not conform.
  • Since so many teens were inspired, so many teens rebelled causing a rebellion.

LONG HAIR FOR EVERYONE

  • Long hair was never acceptable especially for men which is why it was such a change.
  • It was such a shift because it became a rebellion to a point where it became cool.

BARACK OBAMA WINS THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

  • he was the first African American president
  • Since he was the first, it was a huge shift towards racial equality

  • September 11,America was attacked by terrorists resulting in many deaths
  • This caused a major shift, security got stricter especially at airports.

TWILIGHT SAGA

  • The books brought vampirism back into society along with other fictional creatures
  • Some people became so obsessed with the books that they wanted to be the supernatural creatures

HARRY POTTER

  • The series caught the attention of everyone, all ages.
  • After that, children's literature was never the same, it was inspired by Harry potter

ROE VS WADE

  • Supreme Court case that ruled abortion legal
  • This was a major shift toward women's rights since they could choose
