  • It is the largest single contributor to a disease.
  • About 870 million people of the world suffer from malnourishment
  • About 1 in every 8 people of the world suffer from malnourishment

DISEASES CAUSED BY

MALNUTRITION

KWASHIORKOR

  • Sufficient calorie intake but insufficient protein consumption causes this disease.
  • It's common symptoms are swollen ankles and feet,enlarged liver,thinning hair and loss of teeth
  • It results in long- term impact on the child's brain and physical development
  • It can be prevented by adding protein to the diet.
  • It affects children less than five years of age

MARASMUS

  • Marasmus is caused by a severe deficiency of nearly all nutrients, especially protein and carbohydrates.
  • It's symptoms are excessive tissue and muscle wasting,dry skin and drastic loss of adipose tissue in the body
  • The afflicted are often fretful, irritable, and voraciously hungry.
  • Is can be prevented by giving a diet rich in all nutrients,especially carbohydrates and proteins
  • It affects children under one year of age

ANEMIA

  • It is a disease caused due to deficiency of iron in diet
  • It leads to the production of less Red Blood Cells (R.B.C) in our body
  • It's symptoms are feeling of weakness,poor concentration and shortness of breath
  • In serious cases it can even lead to a heart failure or heart attack
  • It can be prevented by supplying a diet rich in iron

GOITRE

  • It is caused due to the deficiency of iodine in diet
  • Symptoms include enlistment of thyroid gland in the throat,lethargy and weakness
  • It can be prevented by having a diet rich in iodine (iodised salt)

BALANCED DIET

INTRODUCTION

  • There are a total of four different types of nutrients- Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins and Vitamins and Minerals.
  • Our diet should contain all these nutrients in fixed proportions for the proper and healthy functioning of our body.
  • It should also contain water and roughage in small amounts too
  • This diet consisting of all the nutrients required by our body in fixed proportions is known as a balanced diet
  • It is necessary for the proper health and growth of our body and also for preventing deficiency diseases

AN EXAMPLE OF A BALANCED DIET

  • 4 oz. grilled chicken breast (184 cal, 25g protein, 3g fat, 0 carb)
  • 1/2 cup sliced strawberries (23 cal, 0.5g protein, 0g fat, 5g carb)
  • 1/2 cup steamed spinach w/ salt and pepper (21 cal, 3g protein, 0g fat, 3g carb)
  • 1/2 cup brown rice, steamed (109 cal, 2g protein, 1g fat, 23g carb)

  • Main staple food of China is rice and noodles.
  • Common foods a non-veg Chinese eats are eggs,meat,fish,pork,beef,duck and pigeon

  • Wheat,rice ,milk and roti form the staple diet of an Indian
  • Non-Veg Indians eat meat,fish,egg and prawn.Chicken is the most common among them.
  • Potatoes,tomatoes ,onions,French beans and green vegetables are also common here .

  • Rice,naan,roti,wheat and pulses are the staple foods of a Pakistani.
  • Biriyani,Kebab and Pulao are also commonly eaten here.

CONCLUSION

  • Malnutrition is a very dangerous condition causing innumerable diseases,some of them being fatal too.
  • Therefore,it is vital to eradicate malnutrition from the Earth,for the advancement and well-being of mankind.
  • There are many organisations like WHO,UNICEF,Red cross ,etc who contribute by helping people in need .
  • These organisations solely run on donations and they do not charge even a single penny for their humble services.
  • So,we all should join hands together and contribute as much as we can for supporting these organisations.
