WHY NEED TO HAVE PAIN RELIEF?

BECAUSE LABOUR PAIN IS VERY PAINFUL

3 ESTABLISHED METHODS

  • Opiates
  • Entonox
  • Epidural

Opiates

  • Related to opium but is synthetic
  • Less side effects of opium
  • Very much less addictive
  • Most common used drug is pethidine

Opiates

  • Side effects:
  • Nausea vomiting
  • Sedation
  • Side effects to baby
  • Antidote

Entonox

  • Mixture of 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide
  • Short duration
  • Expelled through the lungs
  • Side effects
  • Effect to baby?

ENTONOX

Epidural

  • The epidural space is accessed
  • Then the anaesthetic agent is injected
  • Very good pain relief
  • Duration advantage

Epidural side effects

  • Temporary drop in blood pressure
  • Compromise placental blood flow
  • Effect on baby's oxygen supply
  • Close monitoring for first 30 min

Advantages and disadvantages

  • Opiates
  • vomiting nausea sedation
  • sedative effect to baby
  • but cheap and reasonable effect

Entonox

  • Sedation learning curve to use not cheap needs expensive equipment
  • Very little side effect temporary

Epidural

  • Needs high level of expertise to insert
  • Needs a lot of expensive equipment
  • Very expensive
  • Very effective pain relief
  • All three methods have no long term effect
