WHY NEED TO HAVE PAIN RELIEF?
BECAUSE LABOUR PAIN IS VERY PAINFUL
Opiates
- Related to opium but is synthetic
- Less side effects of opium
- Very much less addictive
- Most common used drug is pethidine

Entonox
- Mixture of 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide
- Short duration
- Expelled through the lungs
- Side effects
- Effect to baby?

ENTONOX
Epidural
- The epidural space is accessed
- Then the anaesthetic agent is injected
- Very good pain relief
- Duration advantage

Epidural side effects
- Temporary drop in blood pressure
- Compromise placental blood flow
- Effect on baby's oxygen supply
- Close monitoring for first 30 min

Advantages and disadvantages
- Opiates
- vomiting nausea sedation
- sedative effect to baby
- but cheap and reasonable effect

- Sedation learning curve to use not cheap needs expensive equipment
- Very little side effect temporary

- Needs high level of expertise to insert
- Needs a lot of expensive equipment
- Very expensive
- Very effective pain relief
- All three methods have no long term effect
