BIODIESEL

PRESENTATION BY DREW MIDGLEY

Biodiesel can be made from vegetable oils, animal fats, and recycled restaurant grease

Biodiesel is a renewable alternative fuel

Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification whereby the glycerin is separated from the fat or vegetable oil. The process leaves behind two products -- methyl esters and glycerin

Biodiesel can be found throughout michigan

Biodiesel can be used in any diesel vehicle made after 1993. If the vehicle is older than 1993 the fuel lines need to be replaced before biodiesel is used

One cost of biodiesel is that the plants that can be used to make it can't be grown everywhere.

ADVANTAGES

  • Renewable
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Can be made locally
  • Less expensive

DISADVANTAGES

  • Smaller energy output
  • Large amounts of water are required
  • Could potentially cause food shortages
  • Even though there is lower carbon emissions there is still a carbon emission

The challenge with developing a widespread market is the plants that are used can't be grown everywhere. An example would be the Middle East.

Since the it can't be produced everywhere due to climate it would have to shipped overseas therefore raising the price
