8-1.1 the native americans

  • the eastern woodland Indians were one of the first tribes in the new world. their were an estimated 15,000 Indians in sc. after the Europeans came, the number of native Americans decreased to 7,500 due to disease and warfare.
  • their were 4 language groups in sc(muskohagen,Iroquoian,Siouan,Algonquian
  • primary crops were rice and beans. they also grew squash,pumpkins,gourds and sunflowers. they cut down trees so they could grow crops
  • they hunted wild turkey,bears,deer and wild hog. they set fire to the woods to drive animals towards hunters
  • woodland Indians-villages near streams, Catawba-circular houses called wigwams and the Cherokee lived in rectangular houses made of wood,clay and grass

  • primary focus of religion was ritual.
  • they were polytheistic and some worshipped animals and birds. believed in afterlife.
  • most Indian governments were male dominated but sometimes women would lead the tribe
  • the medicine man led the spiritual lives of people and his word was heeded.
  • York county was no mans land. it was hunting land for the Cherokee and Catawba.
  • all of these tribes got here through the Bering straight during the ice age. they were nomadic and ended up here flowing their food source.

THE SETTLERS 8-1.2

  • the Spanish, French and English came to the new world to explore
  • Spanish-originally were searching for gold but then had plantations and brought in African American slaves for a labor force. established San Miguel de gauldpe. established settlements what is now Florida and South Carolina
  • French-they were searching for the northwest passage. when they eventually made it to the new world they established good relations with the native Americans, which whom they relied on for fur trading. they claimed what is current day Louisiana.
  • English-sailed along the coast of South Carolina and were claiming land for the king of England. they also looked for gold and started to grow Tobacco. many others came to escape religious persecution. they eventually founded the 13 colonies
  • all these settlers brought their languages, culture and religion with them to the new world

the colonies 8.1-3

  • Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the new world
  • they were anxious to attract new settlers. the London company created the headright system that said they would provide you land if they paid their own passage or someone else's
  • all of the New England colonies were founded for religious groups who were persecuted in England and that why the pilgrims ended up here
  • the pilgrims created the mayflower compact which was the first self government in the new world
  • the puritans ended up in the Massachusetts bAY and invested in their own joint stock company and brought their charter with them
  • the puritans made the general assembly and all male Church members could vote. they were very strict about their religion and made schools for kids to learn about the bible. dissenters were exiled.
  • Quakers were in the middle colonies

the slaves 8.1-4

  • the African American slaves were played a major rule in developing the economy in South Carolina
  • South Carolina thrived on plantations and the African slaves were the labor force
  • at first they attempted to use native Americans, but they could escape and live on the land
  • the African slaves were forced to go through the middle passage and work on the plantations making Carolina gold aka rice and indigo
  • the slaves became outraged and led a slave revolt known as the stono rebellion and worried the whites because the slaves outnumbered them 2 to 1

South Carolina 8.1-5

  • south Carolina's natural resources include deer, Pune forests,fertile land and a mild climate
  • the low country had great conditions for growing rice and the coast of charleston made it possible for shipping goods
  • because of all these things, it made South Carolina a profitable colony.
  • most of the sc settlers came from Barbados so they traded with the Caribbean
  • naval stores were very helpful bc they provided tar and pitch to waterproof wooden ships
