  • Took place September 17, 1862
  • Was the bloodiest of the Civil War

Battle of Shiloh

  • Both sides lost but gained land
  • Union reinforcements arrived and helped push the confederates into retreating
  • To control the Mississippi the union had to deal with New Orleans

  • Lasted about 6 weeks before hunger forces confederates to surrender
  • The union gained control of the Mississippi River

  • July 1862 congress decided to allow African Americans to join the army as laborers
