I was much too far out all my life

This is the line where you realize the symbolism in the poem and how he has always been drowning, unable to communicate his situation with those around him. The repetition with the first verse also serves to show how he is again misunderstood by those around him

NOT WAVING BUT DROWNING IS AN ALCHOHOLIC

• They are both drowning in their own way
• They both have problems that are misunderstood by surrounding people
• Both are trying to convey their problems to those around them unsuccessfully

IT WAS TOO COLD ALWAYS: FEELING
