Helping Faculty Improve

In their use of learning technologies
Emphasize how as IT Fellow we are not expected to solve the problem by fixing the problem just by ourselves, but rather by meeting with faculty so that they can better understand learning technologies and improve in their use over time. Overtime, by working with them and explaining how to use the technology more effectively, they will become better at using educational technologies and gain greater confidence. We are also there to support faculty, not students. For most problems students can visit TechStop.

Get To know

YOUR DEPARTMENT
Go around the room and talk about each department's uniqueness. Every department works a bit different and may have somewhat different expectations. Highlight the importance of getting to know the faculty. It might be helpful to do rounds, knocking on doors and finding out if there is something you can help with. Understanding that each faculty is different and our goal of helping them improve in their use of learning technologies. CEHD has a very positive work environment.

Key Technologies

ATS Supported (Moodle, Moodle Oodles)
Highlight various key ATS technologies. Maybe show the webpage that mentions the technologies supported by ATS. Emphasize that we provide support for those applications, but we can also try to find out more about other educational programs they have an interest in using. Maybe share Hart top 100 education technology tools list (http://c4lpt.co.uk/top100tools/). Educational technologies change quickly. Its helpful to be aware of recent changes. Treden's newsletter is very helpful.

Challenges

Difficulties and Solutions
Everyone in the room that was an IT Fellow last year can maybe share their different experiences. What were some of the challenges they experienced and how they address them? Mention that both Sheila and David Ernst will be there to support us if a faculty member is trying repeatedly to have us to do something we are not expected to do. Try not to say "no" but instead mention that "there may be another way" and point them to helpful resources.

When You Are Unsure

About the technology, their question, the best solution
If you would like to learn more about a technology, you can both ask other ATS members or you can attend OIT workshops. OIT holds workshops on various ATS technologies including various Moodle workshops. You can also contact the Moodle team (moodle@umn.edu) when you lack the administrative rights to address a problem. Sometimes faculty will try to do something with Moodle you have not done before. You may have to research a particular feature and get back to them.

When A Request...

Has gone a bit too far
Sometimes faculty may make request that go to far. Maybe you know how to do what they are asking (copy DVDs, or edit a video), but it would take a lot of time and more importantly it is not your responsibility. Refer them to someone who can help them. Pete for example can help with video projects. It might be helpful to go over the ATS Website and what different ATS members do. Try not to overcommit yourself. Contact Sheila if there are complications.

Helping Hands

Conference Travel, Sick Days, "Stuff" Happens
As advanced students, we will likely be presenting at conferences, or may have family emergencies we have to deal with which may limit us from being able to meet with faculty in person on some occasions during the academic year. IT Fellow positions are year-long positions. If this happens, contact other IT Fellows for backup. If you are leaving for more than a few days, fill out the appropriate form and contact Sheila.

What do You Hope

To get out of being an IT Fellow this Year?
As an IT Fellow you may develop instructional videos, tutorials, and other resources. You will improve in your use of learning technologies, and learn more about Moodle. When you think about the 2014-2015 year, what would you like to learn? What would you like this year to be like? Share your expectations and goals. We have thought for a few years of having a way to better share resources. A previous attempt (Cedar) didn't work very well. Treden has cataloged various ATS-wide resources. If you make a great resource that might be useful for others, feel free to share it through the IT Fellow listserv.

2014-2015 Academic Year

I hope we have a great year!
