Bureaucratic Organization
Hundreds of agencies like the FBI help to make up the federal bureaucracy. The people who work for these organizations are called bureaucrats, or civil servants.

Department of Veteran Affairs
Founded in 1989, this department was formerly known as the Veterans Administration. It administers several hospitals as well as educational and other programs designed to benefit veterans and their families.
Department of Homeland Security
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, led to the creation of this department in 2002. It controls Coast Guard, the Border Patrol, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, & many other agencies. It also analyzes information collected by the FBI and the CIA
Independent Agencies
The federal bureaucracy also contains over 100 independent organizations that aren't part of these departments. The presidents appoints the heads of the these agencies.
Regulatory Commissions
occupy a special place in the federal bureaucracy. They are independent of all three branches of the national government.
