Deponent Verbs

Deponent Verbs

  • They are passive verbs that take on active endings.
  • Translated Passively
  • Only have three principal parts
  • And are Split into "five" (technically 4 but there is an io) conjugations

1st conjugation Deponent Verbs

  • Includes a long "A" sound in the 2nd Principal Part
  • Conor, ConAri, Conatus Sum-To try
  • Moror, MorAri, Moratus sum-to delay
  • Vagor, VagAri, Vagatus sum-to wander

2nd Conjugation Deponents

  • Long "E" un the 2nd Principal Part for identification
  • Vereor, VerEri, Veritus sum-to fear
  • Mereor, MerEri, meritus sum-to deserve

3rd Conjugation Deponents

  • Short "e" tells us it is in 3rd Conjuagation
  • Loquor, loqui (e sound), locutus sum: to speak
  • Profiscor, profisci (e sound), profectus sum: to set out
  • Nascor, Nasci (e sound), Natus Sum-to be born

3rd "io" Conjugation

  • The short “E and the -ior in the first p.p. shows that this is a 3rd io verb
  • RegredIOR, regredI, regressus sum: To return
  • progredIOR, progredI progressus sum: to advance, go forward
  • PatIOR, PatI, Passus sum-to suffer, endure
  • IngredIOR, IngredI, Ingressus sum

4th Conjugation

  • The "ior" in the 1st PP and long "e" in 2nd show its 4th
  • ExperIOR, ExperirI, Expertus Sum-to try, test
  • PotIOR, PoirI, Potitus sum-to posses, obtain

What the Principal PArts Mean

  • 1st principal Part= I _____
  • 2nd Principal Part=to _____
  • 3rd Principal Part= I have ____ed

Deponent Endings (Present)

  • Endings on 2nd PP (r, ris, tur, mur, mini, ntur)
  • This is when you take off the ri and add them.
  • Only for 1st , 2nd, and 4th Conjugation. 

3rd + 3rd "io" endings

  • 1st person sing-1st PP
  • 2nd Person Singular- take off "i" on 2nd PP add "e" then add endings
  • 3rd person sing to 2nd Plural- Add endings to 2nd PP
  • 3rd Person Plural- Take off "i" add "u" then endings to 2nd PP

Imperfect Endings

  • Take stem, add -ba then add passive endings
  • Tranlated- "was/were ____ing"

Future Endings

  • Add bo, bi, bu or add "a" or "e" (depending on verb)
  • Then add passive endings
  • Translated-"will ____"

Perfect Endings

  • Take 3rd PP and add correct form of:
  • Sum, es, est, sumus, estis, sunt
  • Translated-"have/has"_____

Pluperfect

  • Take 3rd PP, take off "sum"
  • Add impefect ones
  • Ex: Eram, Eras, Erat, Eramus, Eratis, Erant
  • Translated-"had _____"

Future Perfect

  • Take 3rd PP, take of "sum"
  • Add, "ero, eris, erit, erimus, eritis, erint"
  • Translated- "will have _____"
