PRESENTATION OUTLINE

World War1

By: Erin Dempsey

During World War 1, troops would stay or hide out in trenches, from which they could be unseen and protected from bullets. Sometimes, groups would release mustard gas (a poisonous gas) so that it would sink into the trenches and kill the soldiers in the trenches. Trench warfare was wet, cold, muddy, disease infested, and grim.

In 1917, Germany announced that they would be using unrestricted submarine warfare. They wished to provoke a reaction from the Americans, which worked as this is the main reason America joined the war.

This battle for power spread throughout the entire world as well, as new lands were being colonized and integrated into the global market. Because of this, there was an increase in relations amongst these nations as allies were formed to from strong ties between countries. The alliance system played a crucial role in World War I as world leaders ultimately wanted allies in order to prevent the feeling of loneliness that could potentially defeat them as a nation.

WWI was a Total War as it involved the governments, economies, and populations to an intensity never seen before. The alliance system also made the war a global war because countries who would not otherwise be in the war, were forced to fight.

During the war, women had to fill in the holes in the work force that were created when men went off to war. Patriotism and high wages drew women to the jobs that were formerly held by me. Women took over businesses and farms that their husbands previously owned and managed. Also during the war, women worked behind the scenes as nurses, doctors, and communication clerks.

There was a lot of propaganda used in World War 1. Some propaganda includes TV shows, commercials, speeches, posters, and radio announcements.
