The Supremes

  • The supremes were an African American female singing group in the 1960s
  • They were originally founded as The Primettes in 1959
  • Founding members: Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, Betty McGlown
  • In 1960 McGlown was replaced by Barbara Martin
  • The same year, the Primettes signed with Motown Records as the Supremes

  • In 1965 they set a record for most consecutive number 1 hits
  • In 1967, the group was renamed "Diana Ross and The Supremes"
  • During the 1960s they rivaled the Beatles for worldwide popularity
  • When Ross left to pursue a solo career, they went back to the Supremes
  • Ross was replaced by Jean Terell who was replaced by Scherrie Payne

  • On June 12, 1977 the group was disbanded
  • This happened after their last performance at London's Drury Lane
