LONG TERM DEPRESSION & POTENTIATION

BY JACK wOODLING, CHRIS BANISTER, & CHRIS APPEL

LONG TERM DEPRESSION

  • In neurophysiology, LTD is a reduction in the efficiency of neuronal synapses
  • They last an hour or longer
  • LTD occurs in many areas of the Central Nerv. System
  • Usually found in the hippocampus
  • Neuronal adjustment to have less of a reaction

LTD EXAMPLE

  • Tolerance towards something
  • I.E. Putting in contacts, endurance, being out of shape, insulin shots
  • Become tolerant to certain stimuli

LONG TERM POTENTIATION

  • Long lasting strengthening of a post synaptic nerve cell
  • Thought to be related to learning
  • Causes a quicker reaction
  • Found in hippocampus

LTP

  • Your brain gets used to senses
  • Each time you see the familiar thing your brain requires less stimulation
  • When at first you needed to count 2+2=4, now it comes almost reflexively

LTP

  • Each time NT's cross synapse, cause neuron memory
  • Causes greater stimuli

LTD VS LTP

  • LTD is REDUCTION in efficiency of neuronal synapses
  • LTP is INCREASE in the efficiency of neuronal synapses
