TUBERCULOSIS

What is Tuberculosis?
An infectious disease caused by the growth of nodules (tubercles) in the tissues, especially in the lungs.

Causes
TB is caused by the infectious agent Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
When a person breathes in Mtb-contaminated air, the TB bacteria reaches the lungs. This causes the Mtb infection, this can also remain dormant for years, this is Latent TB

Signs and Symptoms
1. Persistent cough
2. Constant fatigue
3. Weight loss
4. Loss of appetite
5.Fever
6.Coughing up blood
7.Night sweats


People that should be tested for TB
1. People who spend time with someone with TB
2. People with HIV and ones with weakened immune system
3. People with symptoms of TB
4. People from other countries where TB is common
5. People who use illegal drugs
6. People in the US who live and work where TB is common (homeless shelters, jails/prisons, nursing homes)

Treatment
Depends on whether a person has active TB or only TB infection.
If a person has TB but is not active than they need preventive therapy, which is a daily dose of isoniazid (INF) for 6 to 9 months.
If it is active a person will be treated with a combination of several drugs for 6 to 12 months

3.Pyrazinamide
4.Ethambutol
