DEFINITION OF PURITANISM

  • 16th century religious conservatives
  • Wanted to purify the Church of England

PURITAN BELIEFS

  • Everyone is born sinful
  • Jesus died for chosen few
  • Gods grace is freely given
  • Preservance of the Saints
  • Predestination

PREDESTINATION

  • Belief that God knows your fate already
  • Your path is chosen
  • You have no control over what happens

VIEW ON OTHER RELIGIONS

  • There is no acceptance
  • Anyone that didn't follow their beliefs was wrong
  • Non believers were sometimes killed

WHERE THEY CAME FROM

  • They came from England
  • Wanted to purify church
  • Wanted to practice their religion freely

MODERN PROBLEMS

  • Seperation of church and state today
  • People believe they can change where they go
  • Modern lifestyle is too drastically different
  • People change the way we live all the time
  • Puritans killed people who didnt believe what they did

THEOCRACY

  • A government that includes a church
  • This allowed the church to control prosecutions
  • Religious beliefs became law
