INTRODUCTION

  • In this presentation you will be able to answer:
  • What happened during the superstorm of 1993?
  • How many people died?
  • How much damage was there?
  • How is a winter storm rated?

WHO AND WHAT

  • The Superstorm of 1993 may be called
  • Storm of the Century
  • Blizzard of '93
  • It happened on March 12 through the 16

HOW IT FORMED

  • On March 12...
  • A huge low pressure system formed along the Texas Gulf Coast
  • Many thunderstorms in the Gulf of Mexico helped fuel the storm
  • Extremely broad in aerial extent making it easy to predict
  • First storm to be predicted with confidence 5-6 days in advance

WHERE

  • States from Michigan to the Atlantic were affected
  • Also Cuba, Central America and Canada were affected
  • South eastern states were most affected
  • These include the Florida Panhandle and Tennessee

WHAT HAPPENED

  • On the 13th, the storm moved over Florida
  • Then it moved inland across Georgia and into Tennessee
  • It came into contact with a cold front
  • And then it was locked into place by 2 high pressure systems
  • Finally it ran out of water and the low pressure dissipated.

FIRST HAND EXPERIENCES

  • A meteorologist from Birmingham, Alabama,Brian Peters says,
  • "The models must be nuts, where looking at 12-18 inches of snow."
  • "There's just no way. That's like 50% higher than the last record"
  • In fact, the models were right, they got 13 inches.
  • Most people saw snow for the first time in their lives.

The Devestation

  • 300 fatalities
  • A 200-foot and a 174-foot freighters sunk
  • This storm was labeled a 5 in the RSI scale
  • U.S. Coast Guard rescued 235 lost boats in the Gulf
  • 9 billion dollars in damages

RATING

  • One of the ways to rate a snowstorm is called RSI
  • It stands for regional snowfall impact
  • It combines the area of snowfall and amount of snowfall to get the rating
  • Also the number of people living within the snowstorm affects the score
  • Storms are rated 1-5, with 1% of storms getting to a 5.

CONCLUSION

  • Now you know what happened in the winter storm of 1993.
  • There were 300 fatalities.
  • RSI stands for regional snowfall index
  • Low pressure system next to Texas picked up steam and caused the storm
  • $9 billion dollars in damages and 300 deaths
