What motivates the central character"s actions?
The thought of finding her little brother Sammy motivates Cassie to survive after an alien attack on earth.
What literary elements does the writer use to help the reader understand the views of the character?
The writer uses flashback and internal conflict to show how Cassie's views change based on different situations.
What surprised you about the character?
After the attack, Cassie learns to adapt in the wild alone despite her parents' death and being separated from her brother.
What is the most important mood so far? What techniques does the writer use to create this mood?
The writer creates a suspenseful mood by using imagery to describe the apocalyptic setting and foreshadowing to heighten the suspense.
What is the one thing the writer makes you curious about? Why?
By revealing the aliens' appearance late in the novel, the writer makes me curious as to what the aliens look like and which characters to trust.
What are the main character"s most important traits? Why are these traits important?
Cassie's bravery and persistence help her to keep searching for her brother.
How is the main character changing? What is he or she learning about life and the role he or she plays in it?
Cassie becomes mentally and physically stronger throughout the novel. She learns that there are still trustworthy people in the world and has to fulfill the role of protector for Sammy.
What is the most interesting scene in the novel so far? What did the writer do to catch your interest?
When Cassie finds Sammy at an air force base, she meets Ben, another character from which the story's point of view is told. By using different views, the writer catches my interest because the scene can be viewed from various perspectives.
Who is the antagonist? What motivates him or her?
The aliens are motivated to attack and kill the humans because they want earth as their new home.
Is the antagonist likeable even though he or she is trying to prevent the central character from accomplishing his or her goals? Why?
Some of the aliens are likeable because they want to live peacefully with the humans not kill them.
