JAN VAN EYCK

A famous painter who believed in humanism.

LIFE OF JAN VAN EYCK

  • Nobody knows the exact date of his birth but it is believed to be around 1395
  • His death occurred on July 9, 1441
  • He worked and lived in Maaseik, Burgundian Netherlands, and Ghent
  • He believed in humanism

MAJOR EVENT

  • He created oil paint which changed art forever,
  • It changed art forever because it looked better, it was easier to use,
  • And artist could make more things as in textures, looks, and color

MAN IN A TURBAN

  • Man in a turban (1443)
  • An oil painting that has been in the national gallery.
  • Nobody knows if it's a self portrait.
  • The head is a little large comrade to the torso.

MADONNA IN THE CHURCH

  • Made in c.1425
  • It's an oil painting and it was first documented in 1851
  • It was stolen in 1877
  • She is unrealistically larger than her surroundings

ST JEROME

  • An oil painting Made in 1442
  • His workers were the ones who finished it the year after he died
  • It is now in the Detroit Institute of Arts

HOW HE SHOWED HIS BELIEFS

  • An example would be Arnolfini Wedding made in 1434
  • He makes it look like a regular painting
  • He expressed that they're on holy ground by having their sandals off
  • He also expresses his loyalty to god with the dog in between them
