PRESENTATION OUTLINE

GAMMA RAYS

BY: CAROLINE, COLIN, AND NOLE

DEFINITION

  • Waves in the EM spectrum with the highest frequecncey and shortest wavelength
  • They are known in space to have gamma bursts

LOCATION AND QUALITIES

  • At the end of the EM spectrum
  • Has the highest fequency
  • Shortest wavelength
  • 10(16) Hz to more than 10(24) Hz

Effects on human health
-Considered the primary hazard to the general population during the majority of radiological emergencies
-the most severe radiation sickness is mostly from the gamma radiation
- in potassium which is found in soil, water, meats bananas, and other high potassium foods
-in radium which is a source of radiation for radiotherapy
-prevented by avoiding devices that use gamma rays and assuring doctors or dentist that use these devices have proper qualifications

CANCER TREATMENT

  • Because gamma rays kill livings cells they are used to kill cancer cells
  • Gamma rays focus on tumors
  • They are used to target the DNA in cancer cells to destroy it
