GREEK GOLDEN AGE

  • Started In the 400s B.C. Greece entered a new era of cultural progress.
  • Thus, we call this period the golden age of greek culture.
  • Athens stood as the symbol of Greece's golden age.
  • The city's wealth and power drew artists and teachers from across Greece.
  • These people worked to make Athens a center of learning and artistic achievement

ARCHITECTURE

  • A high hill called Acropolis was the center of the original city-state.
  • At the top of the Acropolis stood the the PARTHENON, a white marble temple built in honor of Athena.

PAINTING

  • The Greeks were very fond of painting on vases
  • They painted graceful and natural movements of their subjects

SCULPTURE

  • Myron & Phidias were two of histories greatest sculptors.
  • Myron created the famous Discus Thrower.
  • Phidias created the statue of Athena.

THE RISE OF PHILOSOPHY

  • Philosophy was one of Greeks greatest achievements.
  • The first Greek philosopher was Thales of Miletus.
  • Thales and others wanted to understand the nature of the cosmos, or universe.

SOCRATES

  • One of the most important thinkers.
  • He taught that education was the key to personal growth.
  • Socrates did not use memorization as a teaching tool instead he taught to think for themselves.
  • Socrates's enemies falsely accused himof denying the existence of many Greek gods, he was
  • Found guilty and was executed.

  • A wealthy young aristocrat and the greatest of Socrates students.
  • After the death of Socrates, he founded the Academy, a special school in Athens for teaching
  • philosophy

  • Pythagoras founded the Pythagorean theorem
  • Hippocrates is the founder of medical science

GREEK THEATER

  • Dramas plays containing action or dialogue & conflict
  • Tragedies, the main character struggled against fate or events
  • Comedies, these plays made fun of of ideas and people
