  • Known for it's meaning of decling independence and war

  • Starts on Sep. 15 (eve)
  • Children have half a day of school & mini-fiesta
  • Usually celebrated with family or friends
  • Large dinner
  • After dinner: tequila and piñata

  • Custom to drink agua de jamaica/horchata
  • Citizens gather in city streets with flags and noisemakers
  • President rings a bell at 11pm and says names of war heroes
  • Bell represents the cry of independence from a priest
