  • Turmoil between the Soviet Union and the Allied Powers
  • World War II & Russian Revolution brought more tension
  • "Cold" because there were no actual battles
  • It was all about innovation and advancements, not gunfire

ECONOMIC SYSTEMS

  • Capitalism - individual controls everything
  • Capitalism - can only have what you can afford
  • Capitalism - free press, healthcare, food, property
  • Communism - government in charge of everything
  • Communism - gvernmtnet owns property, equal healthcare, food and rewards

U.S. policy of containment

  • Policy - stop communism from spreading
  • Strain on the Soviet & U.S. relationship
  • Russia ignored it
  • Communism spread to Cuba

Kitchen Debate

  • Capitalism (Nixon) vs. Communism (Khrushchev) 
  • Compared technologies between U.S. and USSR
  • Reviewed differences in ideology and quality of life
  • Took place in the model kitchen exhibit of the U.S. trade and Cultural Fair
