  • he quit law and lost all his land after Caesar's death
  • died September 20, 19 BC
  • the Aeneid was to be burned at his burial because it was incomplete

vergil's sources

  • influenced by many latin and greek authors
  • ArgoNautica was a famous source
  • The influence of greek tragedies can be seen in the Aeneid
  • Largets infuence was Homer
  • Parts of the Aeneid resemble the Odyssey and the Illiad
  • Copying was seen as a compliment, not copyright

  • take place in the time of the Trojan war and aftermath
  • Was expected to be interpreted by romans through events they had experienced at that time
  • The success of Rome depends on Aeneas
  • His descendents include Julius Caesar
  • The Aeneid follows from the founding of Rome through the Punic Wars, Civil Wars and Octavian vs Antony
