Catherine Beecher's family had a large impact on America's educational history in the late 1800s.

Family Troubles
After her mother's death, Catharine took on the household responsibilities at the age of 16. The younger children looked up to her father, even though he remarried a year later.

Reason for Education
Beecher longed for gender equality, especially through education. She believed that all women and girls should have the essential background from learning.

She wrote books due to lack of educational textbooks for her school; including arithmetic, theology and mental/moral philosophy.
