DIALECT

  • a regional or social variety of language
  • a way of speaking that differs from the standard language

DIALECT IS DISTINGUISHED BY:

  • Pronounciation
  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary

AMERICAN DIALECT

  • New England, Southern, and Western/General American
  • 24 or more American Dialects

STANDARD AND NON-STANDARD

  • Standard is written or spoken
  • Bad or incorrect language

DIALECTS VS. LANGUAGES

  • Measured by mutual intelligibility

Example:
Feels About Lennie - He says " Lennie can be a god damn nucence but hes good to travel with" (Steinbeck 41). Feels about himself (George) - " If i was able I could live so easy" (Steinbeck 36). Often thinks about his life and how it could be different.

DIALECT REVEALS

  • That they are not wealthy
  • Could not afford an education.
  • Speak often in slang
