WOMEN OF ISLAM

OVER THE CENTURIES

  • Muslim women have never had the same rights as Muslim men.
  • Women's rights resemble many other religions in the past
  • In the Quran it states that men an women should have equal rights
  • The majority of Muslim men in the past have not respected these rights
  • Due to the way they were raised and lack of understanding

TREATMENT

  • Treated more like property than people
  • Husbands considered rulers of the family
  • One man could have up to four or five wives at a time
  • Men had to treat each wife equally
  • Men had to be able to support each wife and child

EDUCATION

  • religious education was highly valued
  • Weren't allowed to attend university
  • Encouraged to attend lectures at mosques

ECONOMY

  • In medieval times, women played small roles
  • Main work was agriculture and textiles
  • In 12th century considered part of working class
  • Family always came first before work

DRESS

  • Women must not show any skin except hands and face.
  • Women must not dress vainly; no makeup or jewelry.
  • Women must not attract the attention of men or dress as men.
  • Women must not wear bright colors or tight hijabs.
  • These rules are not as strict now as they were in the past.
