BERLIN CONFERENCE

  • Also known as the Congo Conference
  • Regulated European colonization and trade in Africa
  • Organized by Otto Von Bismarck
  • It's outcome can be seen as the formalization for the
  • Scramble for Africa

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

  • In the 1870s King Leopold sent emissaries...
  • To establish trade in the Congo which began a flurry of imperialistic activity
  • Between 1880 and 1910 Africa was divided up among the Europeans
  • European imperialism was caused by them wanting to gain power
  • Europeans would take over a colony in Africa so other Europeans wouldn't take it

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • The Europeans had better gunstocks fight with
  • They had medicine to fight malaria
  • They had steamboats to go across rivers
  • They saw the need to build international markets

END OF COLONIALISM

  • Decolonization of Africa started after World War Two
  • Ghana was the first country to challenge the colonial order
  • The road to independence for some countries wasn't smooth
  • African leaders were able to be involved after the end colonialism

LASTING EFFECTS

  • African governments were forced to govern a diverse population
  • Africa became industrialized
  • Traditional African cultures were broken
  • Africa was broken into colonies with rival tribes and civil wars broke out
