In the Middle Ages, some of the new born babies with disabilities were even considered as bad omens that need to be abandoned. The disabled were the minority and vulnerable groups of the society for a long time.

The disabled were the minority and vulnerable groups of the society for a long time.

however, this situation started to change when the soldiers came back from wars. Injured or paralyzed Veterans greatly increased the population of the disabled groups. The soldiers expected the US government to provide rehabilitation service in return for their sacrifices. They became the pioneers to start the disability right movement.
PARENTS
On the other hand, parents who have children with disabilities also advocated at the forefront of the movement. They demanded to have their children back from the institutions and asylums, they are looking for the equal opportunities for their children to go to schools as other normal kids.
THE FATHER OF DISABILITIES RIGHTS MOVEMENT
ED Roberts, born in 1939, is one of the most important leaders and activists of the Disability Movement. the Father of the Disabilities Rights Movement. He was the first student with severe disabilities to attend the University of California, Berkeley.

He led the Berkeley Center for Independent Living (CIL) which is the first independent living service and advocacy program run by and for people with disabilities.

IN JULY 1990, President Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), people with disabilities finally were protected by laws to have equal rights as others did.

people with disabilities could then use the public services like the transportation systems. Moreover, all public accommodations were expected to have changes to make easier for the people with disabilities to access. For example, the extra space in the bathroom for the wheel chair, the elevators instead of stairs

Stephen Hawking became the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge in 1979 while he was suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease. He wouldn't have these opportunities and chances to show his talent if there is no equal rights for people with disabilities.
