My backround

  • I am from Vermont
  • I believe that free men have more motivation to work,
  • compared to an enslaved man.
  • where the manual labor is performed by slaves,
  • labor dishonors the hands of free men

Writer of the Compromise

  • Henry Clay wrote the compromise
  • He was helped by Daniel Webster
  • It was proposed to the Senate on
  • January 29, 1850

Goals of the Compromise

  • Clay hoped it would settle all questions in controversy,
  • that was between free and slavestates
  • growing out of the subject of slavery
  • popular sovereignty-  It is the right for citizens of a territory
  • to vote for or against slavery

Terms of the Compromise

  • California was to be admitted as a free state
  • Utah and New Mexico were to be decided by popular sovereignty
  • Texas was paid 10 million dollars by the federal government
  • The sale of slavery was banned in D.C but slavery was still allowed
  • Fugitive Slave Act- people from free states had to help capture slaves

Parts I agree with

  • I agree with the idea of abolishing slave trade in D.C
  • I am happy about California becoming a free state,
  • So slaves cannot take a free mans job
  • I am happy that we were able to obtain Mew Mexico from Texas

Things I do not Agree with

  • I do not agree with New Mexico and Utah being able to vote
  • on slavery
  • Slavery should not be allowed in our Capitol
  • I won't bring back slaves to  their masters because we must fight slavery
