SETTING

  • The coffeehouse is known as Mattie and her mother home.
  • The coffeehouse also symbolizes a place where people gather.
  • Oligive mansion was later turned into Bush Hill.
  • Market stalls- stretched 3 blocks
  • Eliza home- lived with her brother since her husband passed.

CHARACTERS

  • Matilda- young, stubborn
  • Mattie's Mom- mean, harsh
  • Eliza- former slave, nice, kind-loving
  • Grandfather- old veteran, likes adventures
  • Dr. Benjamin Rush- a doctor who helped cure the fever.

THEME

  • Accomplishing dreams- Mattie wants to go to Paris.
  • Suffering- many people are dying and sick (Mattie got sick)
  • Self-reliance- Mattie had to take care of her self when her grandfather got sick.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

  • Simile- comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, using like or as.
  • Metaphor- comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind.
  • Hyperbole- exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken seriously.
  • Onomatopoeia- the formation of a word from a sound used for effects.
  • Imagery- language that causes people to imagine pictures in their mind.
  • Foreshadowing- a warning or indication of a future event.
  • Allusion- a statement that hints at something rather than being direct. An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly.
  • Alliteration- the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
  • Personification- giving places, objects, and other non-living things human abilities.
  • Symbol- a thing that represents or stands for something else.

  • Simile: My stomach flipped over like an egg in a skillet.
  • Onomatopoeia: THUNK!
