FEASTING AND HOSPITALITY RULES

  • The Ancient Greek concept of hospitality is known as Xenia.
  • Zeus is known as the protector of travelers and oversees Xenia.
  • Xenia was important because no modern technology.
  • Travelers relied on the hospitality of others for shelter and food.
  • Xenia is the Greek relationship of two people from different regions.

FEASTING AND HOSPITALITY RULES

  • People believed the Gods wanted them to show hospitality.
  • Turning away someone would result in punishment from the gods.
  • They feared the wrath of the Gods and so showed hospitality to travelers.
  • Providing hospitality isn't necessarily wanted by people, they only fear the Gods.

RULES OF XENIA

  • HOSTS ARE EXPECTED TO RESPECT THEIR GUESTS
  • They are expected to take in strangers
  • Providing guests with food, drinks and a bath, if necessary
  • It is frowned upon for the host to ask questions
  • First, the guest has to state their needs that the host must meet

RULES OF XENIA

  • GUESTS ARE EXPECTED TO RESPECT THEIR HOSTS
  • The guests are expected to be polite to the hosts.
  • They must insure that they're not a burden and act courteous.

XENIA IN "THE ODYSSEY"

  • Throughout Odysseus and Telemachus' travels, Xenia is seen.
  • Strangers are greeted and treated when going to a new place.
