PRESENTATION OUTLINE
FIFTH BUSINESS AND ARCHETYPES ACCORDING TO CARL JUNG
WHO IS CARL JUNG?
SWISS PSYCHIATRIST AND PSYCHOTHERAPIST WHO FOUNDED ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY. HE ALSO DEVELOPED EXTROVERSION, INTROVERSION, ARCHETYPES AND THE COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS.
For Jung, he believes that our primitive past becomes the basis of our human psyche directing and influencing our present behaviour.
He also believes symbols from different cultures are often very similar because they have emerged from archetypes shared by the whole human race
Definition of Archetypes: Images and thoughts which have a universal meaning across different cultures which may show up either in dreams, literature, art or religion.
Important Archetypes in our common world.
PERSONA: (social mask) this is the public face or a role that a person presents to other people that is different from who they really are (like an actor)
SHADOW: It is a very common archetype that reflects deeper elements of our psyche, where 'latent dispositions' which are common to us all arise. It also reflects something that was once split from us in early management of the objects in our lives
ANIMA AND ANIMUS: Each sex manifests attitudes and behavior of the other by virtue of centuries of living together. The psyche of a woman contains masculine aspects (the animus archetype) and the psyche of a man contains feminine aspects (the anima archetype).
FIFTH BUSINESS: Roles that are neither hero or heroine but are important for a good ending. The player that takes part in this role is referred to as fifth business.
ARCHETYPES IN FIFTH BUSSINESS
- MARY- MOTHERLY FIGURE
- PADRE BLAZON- WISE MAN
- PAUL- MAGICIAN
- LIESL- CONFIDANTE/HERMAPHRODITE/ DEVIL
- BOY STANTON- VILLIAN AND LEOLA AS THE MAIDEN
MARY-MOTHERLY FIGURE, SACRED FEMININE, FOOL SAINT
figure of a woman who resembles the Virgin Mary in many ways. Mary Dempster performed three ‘miracles’ the first being the transformation of the tramp. “He was very civil […] he wanted it so badly.” (Page 48) After this affair with the tramp, the tramp changed his life for the better and spent his life in the service of others. Although there are two more miracles, this miracle is the one that best shows the distinct connection of Mary Dempster as ‘The Sacred Feminine’
feeding, nurturing, and soothing, Dunny feels towards Mary. “made her carry the affection [he] should have spread among fifty people." This archetype is only true when looking at Mary Dempster through the eyes of Dunny, as others view her as a crazy woman. Dunny views her as his ‘good deed’ as some might call it.
Mary seems to be saintly, but in reality, she does not display the prudence enough to be one. she cares and tries to do good when and where possible. but it does not show especially in the act concerning herself and the tramp
PAUL-MAGICIAN
“rays and radars and whatnot. But every boy understands those things. Not many people really understand clockwork because they carry it on their wrists in full sight and never think about it.” (Page 216). The mystery surrounding Paul is what makes him different; what makes him the best; the mystery about him causes people to regard him as a figure of power and thus, his goals are accomplished.
LIESL-CONFIDANTE (Padre being the other)
Dunny feels comfortable speaking to Liesl even though she does not promise to keep it a secret. she is the only person in the book who can go in depth of Dunny's soul and mind.
LIESL-HERMAPHRODITE
Commonly known to Dunstan as the bearded lady from the circus. she is a woman who dresses as a man and has integrated her animus and represents self realization.
BOY STAUNTON- RICH MAN
He is the epitome of the word ‘upper-class’. He is the richest of the rich, the classiest of the classy and the ‘go to’ person on matters of finance and business. Boy is asked to watch over the food distribution for the Second World War; this shows the trust that other upper-class businessmen have in him. Boy is the most successful businessman in Canada and the most reliable – hence the position of overseer of the food distribution.
LEOLA- THE MAIDEN
Leola is the maiden as she is naive, vulnerable and resists playing the more assertive role that Boy wants from her.
