WOUNDS AND BLEEDING

By: Colton Gaudette, David Howard and Alecia Lizotte

TYPES OF BLEEDING

  • EXTERNAL BLEEDING is where the the outer skin on the body is broken or split, then bleeds outward, like cuts.
  • INTERNAL BLEEDING is where the skin stays intact, so it bleeds from the inside, like bruises.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE SEVERE INTERNAL BLEEDING

  • Blood coming from some body orfices (nose, eyes, anus, mouth.
  • If the person is in shock

HOW TO HELP A PERSON WITH INTERNAL BLEEDING

  • Call for medical help immediately.
  • Lay person down on its back, then raise the legs 8-12 inches, unless the injury is on the head.
  • If the person has a head injury, put them in the reclining position.
  • If the person is vomiting, put them in the recovering position.
  • Cover them in some sort of blanket or sheet of fabric for warmth.

HOW TO CLEAN MINOR WOUNDS

  • Wash your hands, then (if you own any) wear disposable gloves
  • Wash wounds with soap and water. If the wound is still dirty, find medical attention.
  • Place a clean and wet cloth sheet on the wound, then add pressure to it.
  • When it stops bleeding, remove the cloth, then apply antibiotic ointment to the wound.
  • Cover wound with another cloth, then a bandage. Change the cloth and bandage daily. If wound becomes infected, (if it's red, tender, and swollen) find medical attention.

HOW TO HELP A PERSON WITH A SEVERE WOUND

  • If you can, find medical attention immediately. Wear disposable gloves.
  • Put the victim on its back, lying down, with its feet elevated. If the person has a wound on the head, lay them in a reclining position.
  • Follow the blood trail to see exactly where it is. Then expose the wound.
  • Place any type of dressing (towels, napkins, handkerchiefs...) on the wound with pressure.
  • If an arm or leg is wounded, raise it right above the heart, but still apply pressure.
  • If the wound is still bleeding, put pressure on a "pressure point".

  • When the bleeding stops, let go of the pressure point, then add a new dressing on the old one. People with puncture wounds need a tetanus booster, or a tetanus shot.
