THE POWER OF DANCE

  • Dance is a celebration of culture through movement
  • It can tell a story and evoke emotion
  • Dance is a universal communication
  • Many people are unable to express themselves any other way
  • The fitness and muscle memory aspects can change the way you live

AMERICA HAS A RICH HISTORY OF DANCE

  • Today I will highlight a few of my favorites.
  • Dance has changed my life and given me a sense of self.
  • The sense of accomplishment when mastering a move is like nothing else.
  • I have met people that I had nothing else in common with but through dance forged lifelong friendships
  • Join me in exploring these styles that range from the turn of the last century, to the emergence of modern pop culture!

BALLET

  • Children begin training as young as three years old, traditionally it is best to wait until 12 to begin pointe.
  • Dancers may move on to dance professionally and retire by the age of 35.
  • The first US ballet performance offended many people due to the focus on the female body.

SWING

  • Swing was a rebellious movement.
  • The "swing era" was at it's height from 1935-1946.
  • It was how teenagers entertained themselves
  • This dance form is till widely practiced today!!

DANCE IN FILM

  • Many of our elder relatives connected to dance through film.
  • Grace Kelly and Fred Astaire are one of the most notable dance combos.

LATIN

  • There are countless Latin dance styles with all kinds of other cultural influence such as African.
  • Some partner dances include Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, Paso Doble , Argentine Tango and Mambo.
  • Some fantastic solo examples are Salsa styling and Brazillian Samba.
  • People in countries all over the world gather to compete and dance for fun with these styles.

BREAKDANCING

  • Breakdancing started in the early 1970's as a street dance among youths in New York.
  • Bboying and bgirling is a global experience.
  • Hip hop culture includes graffiti, Emcees, turntablists and Bboys.
  • The strength training for this dance form is incredibly intensive.
  • People of all ages gather to compete, perform and dedicate their lives to breaking.
