Vestibule:
an antechamber, hall, or lobby next to the outer door of a building.

The girl was standing in the vestibule waiting for her ride to pick her up. 

Odious:

Extremely unpleasant; repulsive 

I find Mondays more odious than any other day of the week. 

Pewter:
A metal traditionally 85–99% tin, with the remainder consisting of copper, antimony, and bismuth

The girl wore a blue dress with a pewter badge attached. 

Nettle:
a herbaceous plant that has jagged leaves covered with stinging hairs.

When I was hiking I tripped on a rock and landed on a nettle. 

Caterwauling:
(of a cat) make a shrill howling or wailing noise.

When I was going to bed I heard caterwauling, which lasted for fifteen minutes.

Ensconced:
settle (someone) in a comfortable, safe, or secret place

My brother lay ensconced in three blankets, and curled in a ball. 

Spangles:
a small thin piece of glittering material

The girls shirt was covered in multi colored spangles. 

Lugubrious:
looking or sounding sad and dismal.

The boy walked away lugubriously when his friends didn't want to play with him.

Flogging:
beat (someone) with a whip or stick as punishment or torture.

The man was flogged for disrespecting his owner.

Conflagration:
An extensive fire that destroys a great deal of land or property

The Great Grain Elevator conflagration of 1928 in Omaha, NE destroyed many crops and killed several people.
