ELEMENTS OF ART DIGITAL SNAPSHOT

SHAPE

  • A shape is a flat figure.
  • It is created when actual or implied lines to surround a space.
  • A shape can be circular, rectangular, triangular, or other.

HERE, A VARIETY OF SHAPES CAN CLEARLY BE SEEN BORDERED BY THICK LINES.

THE LINES IN THE TILE CONVERGE TO CREATE NONAGONS BORDERED BY SQUARES.

FORM

  • Objects with volume and mass.
  • Can and should be viwed from many angles.
  • Examples include spheres, cubes, cylinders, pyramids and cones.

FROM THIS ANGLE, THE CAN OF BEANS IS SHOWN TO BE A THREE DIMENSIONAL CYLINDER.

THIS BOOK HIS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF A SLIM, RECTANGULAR MODEL.

COLOR

THE QUALITY THAT MAKES SOMETHING GREEN, BLUE, ORANGE, ETC.

THIS PICTURE FEATURES THE COLORS YELLOW, RED, NEON BLUE, PURPLE, AND GREEN.

THESE CUPS, FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, ARE COLORED GREEN, BLUE AND PINK.

VALUE

  • The element of art that means the lightness or darkness of a figure.
  • In art, this is applied as shading.

IN THIS PICTURE, THERE IS ONLY ONE SOURCE OF LIGHT IN THE ROOM, LEAVING MOST OF IT LEFT IN SHADOW.

IN THIS PHOTO, THE LIGHT IS ONLY COMING FROM ONE SIDE OF THE ROOM, MAKING FOR A SHARP CONTRAST.

TEXTURE

  • The way a surface feels.
  • Actual texture or how it looks like it feels.
  • Examples include rought, soft, bumpy, and cracked.

THIS PICTURE IS A CLOSEUP ON A DOG'S FUR COAT, AND HAS A FURRY, BRISTLY LOOK TO IT.

THIS SURFACE, WHICH IS ACTUALLY THE SURFACE OF A DOG BED, HAS A ROUGH UNEVEN LOOK.

SPACE

THE EMPTY OR OPEN AREA BETWEEN, AROUND, ABOVE, BELOW OR WITHIN OBJECTS.

HERE, PART OF THE CANVAS IS PURPOSELY BLANK TO FORM A SHIP AND OCEAN OUT OF NEGATIVE SPACE.

IN THIS EXAMPLE, THE PATH SEEMS TO NARROW AS IT GOES ON, EVENTUALLY CREATING A VANISHING POINT.

LINE

  • A line is a mark with length and direction.
  • It is created by a point that moves across a surface.
  • Lines can be straight, curved, jagged, or other.
  • An implied line is a line that is not actually there, but is implied to exist.

HERE, THICK LINES ARE USED TO FORM INTRICATE PATTERNS.

HERE, AN IMPLIED LINE EXISTS AS BORDER BETWEEN PAPER AND TILE.
