JOHN DALTON

(1766-1844)

HIS LIFE

  • John Dalton was a chemist, meteorologist and physicist.
  • John did most of his work at Manhester College in Oxford.

WHAT HE DID

  • John Dalton was the first man to create the Atomic Model.
  • He thought the atom was the smallest possible component of matter.
  • He did this in 1808.
  • He suggested how atoms acted. He was the first man to explain
  • the behaviours of an atom in terms of their measurement and weight.

WHAT HE USED TO DO THIS

  • Standard lab equipment
  • He was originally observing elements until he came across the atom.
  • Manometers for the measurement of gas pressure.
  • He discovered what he did only with this standard equipment
  • and luck.

WHAT HE DISCOVERED ABOUT ATOMS

  • He discovered that all elements were
  • made up of atoms.
  • He also found out which elements all
  • the atoms made
