OUT OF THE NIGHT THAT COVERS ME

BY: EMILY STRICKLAND

In the long run was it best for John that he was not spared his struggles? Do you think children today are too sheltered? Not sheltered enough?

Yes,it was good that he was not spared his struggles. Because you have to be hard on kids if you want them to grow up right. And that if you don't make kids work some day they will grow up to be brats!!! I think kids now are to sheltered. Because now they don…

Was Aunt Nelda trapped in her way of life any more so than women today?

No,because women still want a lot of stuff.
And they still do what there husbands say. Also women are responsible most of the time.Women today worry about the kids more than the husband!! And the women have to do house work.

If you were spirited back in time to live in the story, which character would you most want to be?

Mrs.Vance, because she is always happy. And she cares for people like she did for John. Also she likes to cook and I like to cook. And Mrs.Vance still loves the judge even though he is going blind!!! Mrs.Vance also believes in God and helps in the church.

The book did not end with everyone living "happily ever after." Were you satisfied with the ending? Do you think it was realistic?

No, because the ending just kind of ends. It just leaves you hanging there. It never tells you what happens to the Vance's and if John goes and lives with them. The book was really believable and you could understand it really good!!!! But I hate the ending because it just stops!!!!!

What elements in the story point out the good and bad sides of small town life.

The good part of a small town life is yup all care for each other like when the Vance's helped John get away from the Spraigs. But there are a lot of bad things about it. Everything spreads really fast like rumors. And there is no one to do anything with so you go with anyone you can. Like when Uncle Luther went drinking with the naighbors.

Did Johns transition match, in the way, the transformation that was taking place in the south as it was drawn kicking and screaming into a new era?

Yes, because John started off small and weak. Like the slaves had no power and no rights. And threw out the story he was getting stronger. Like the slaves got more rights. At the end of the book he was strong and could work. Like the slaves started to get rights and not doing stuff there owners said by running away.f
