EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION - CREATED BY EXTERNAL FACTORS

BEHAVIOURIST PERSPECTIVE

  • focus on the observable behavioural changes
  • rewards - reinforce desired behaviours, to be repeated
  • punishment - to decrease the likeness of undesired behaviour to occur
  • motivation is extrinsic
  • Pupils will get immediate feedback

Cognitivist Perspective

  • belief in ability to achieve a goal
  • goals set by the pupils
  • the perceived value of the outcome for themselves
  • individual's interpretations of the relationship between actions and consequences
  • 4 theories: cognitive dissonance, attributions theory, expectancy x value, self-efficacy theory
