PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The Southern Lights

Aurora Australis

How are they caused?
The lights are produced by the solar wind which is a stream of electrons and protons coming from the sun as it collides with gases in the upper atmosphere.

The Aurora Australis lasts for 15 to 40 minutes. It then can reoccur after 2 to 3 hours.

The Aurora Australis is usually about sixty to seventy miles above the ground. However, pink ones tend to be about 50 miles away, and red about 150 miles off the ground.

Auroral displays are most common at the equinoxes. And you can only see them from March to September when there are 24 hours of darkness.
