PROTOZOA

DEFINITION

  • A diverse group of unicellular eukaryotic organisms.
  • Single-celled with animal like behaviors such as motility and predation.
  • Infections caused by Protozoa are contagious.

MALARIA

  • Common disease that spreads through mosquito bites.
  • More than 1300 cases reported in the US.
  • Reported mainly in travelers from the South Asian sub continent or Africa.
  • Symptoms include headache, chills, tremors, aches and shaking.

TOXOPLASMOSIS

  • Most common parasites.
  • More common in those with weak immune system.
  • Symptoms include: body ache, fatigue, fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Can be mistaken for the flu.

BABESIOSIS

  • Caused by babesia parasite that is transmitted through ticks.
  • Can also be transmitted through blood transfusions.
  • May not show any symptoms, but symptoms may include nausea, body ache, fatigue, fever and chills.

PREVENTION

  • Sterilization
  • Drink clean water
  • Washing hands.
  • Cook food to recommended temperatures.
