PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ACID RAIN

Brenden Francis and Jacob Lemanski

States with worst acid rain Problem

  • New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia
  • There is about a PH of 4.7 in my state.
  • Acid rain is worse in eastern states because the soil is lacking a buffer.
  • Western states have the buffer that absorbs SO2 and NO2.

Gases that cause acid rain

  • Sulfur Dioxide
  • Nitrogen Dioxide
  • SO2 comes from the burned sulfur when gas is extracted from oil.
  • NO2 comes from lightning and combustion from car engines.

When gases react with water in the atmosphere

  • They create acidic compounds.

Acidic compounds mixed in the atmosphere

  •  The solution is made of Nitric acid and Sulfuric acid.

How the compounds in acid rain spread

  • The particles evaporate into the air and are blown by wind.
  • The acid rain then hits the ground and the process repeats.

ocean acidification

  • Ocean acidification happens when carbon dioxide s absorbed by sea water.
  • The reaction reduces PH, and also reduces the oceans carbonate ion.
  • Also called OA for short.
  • Ocean acidifiction causes the ocean to lose minerals.

Effects of acid Rain

Surface Waters

  • Acid rain flows into waters, and contaminates the waters.
  • Affects many organisms that live in the water.

Forests

  • Acid rain falls on the trees, and kills them.
  • The needles may die on Evergreen Trees.
  • Grow at a very slow rate.

Automotive coatings

  • Acid rain etches paint on cars.
  • The rain acids the color on cars, and may deteriorate finish.

visibility

  • The sulfate particles can cause reduction of visibility by 50-70%
